These days, Clippy’s role has been taken over by far more sophisticated language models – the face of AI most of us have already got used to.
LLMs (large language models) enable us to build our own agents — sophisticated virtual assistants that can instantly take on analysis, planning, as well as drafting and preparation of whatever tasks we assign them. At first glance it looks fantastic, but to make this kind of advanced collaboration with AI agents work, first we have to give them access to our data, documents, and personal digital tools. And that’s where the crucial question appears: How do we keep ourselves secure?
Data: Feed Your AI
Yes, however odd it may sound – AI feeds on data, and that’s actually the basis of how its models are trained. Only thanks to data analysis can artificial intelligence answer our questions or carry out various tasks. In practice, when we use widely available AI chats for business purposes, our contracts, invoices, and other internal company documents end up on servers of their providers. Many small and large companies streamline their day-to-day work this way. But is it actually the right path?
From X to Y
Just to be clear, this is not about conspiracy theories and the aim of this article is not to alarm anyone — we are assuming that the safeguards against data leaks promised by AI model developers and providers are fully functional and highly effective. However, LLMs operate based on prompts – questions or instructions from users, and in practice a user could be anyone with Internet access. So, if user X comes up with the right prompt (asks a sufficiently well-crafted question), they could, accidentally or deliberately, get a response containing information drawn from the data that user Y has already shared. It doesn’t have to happen, but it’s not impossible either. That’s because AI can, in a purely „mechanical” way, decide that its answer does not cross the line and violate private or confidential territory, even when it actually is the case.
